Autumn travel requires cautious drivers

Autumn in Santa Fe is gorgeous. Often called the “City of Gold,” Santa Fe attracts many tourists in the autumn. While people are encouraged to visit and take in the splendor of the changing leaves, they must also exercise caution on the roads.

The majority of New Mexico is elevated more than 4,000 feet above sea level, making the state high-altitude. People who drive through high-altitude areas may experience dizziness, nausea and disorientation, all of which could lead to accidents on the road. Autumn, too, brings special hazards.

Drinking and driving hazards

Autumn in New Mexico comes with some additional hazards that drivers need to be aware of before heading out. Special festivities such as Oktoberfest can lead to drunk drivers behind the wheel. The same can be said for football season when viewing parties and tailgates are often overflowing with alcoholic beverages.

Getting behind the wheel after you’ve been drinking can lead to serious injury or even death. That’s why police are on the lookout for drunk drivers. This time of year, cases of DUI go up, especially between Halloween and Thanksgiving.

Hazardous road conditions

While the falling leaves are beautiful, they can also be deadly. The combination of wet leaves and road conditions can quickly create a slippery mess. Motorists need to be extra cautious when driving in through leaves on the roadway.

Wildlife can lead to wild rides

Driving in New Mexico means that you may encounter some extraordinary wildlife. Majestic Elk and bears are plentiful and may be seen idly standing in the middle of the road. Deer are also a hazard, as they bound across the road without warning, often running from hunters.

What to do if you’re in an accident

If, despite your best efforts, you’re in an accident due to any of these hazardous conditions, don’t panic. Legal guidance can help you navigate any pending charges you may face.
